{"id":2209,"date":"2016-03-07T14:35:14","date_gmt":"2016-03-07T12:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mariusbancila.ro\/blog\/?p=2209"},"modified":"2016-03-07T16:40:29","modified_gmt":"2016-03-07T14:40:29","slug":"c-17-standard-a-major-disappointment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mariusbancila.ro\/blog\/2016\/03\/07\/c-17-standard-a-major-disappointment\/","title":{"rendered":"C++17 standard a major&#8230; disappointment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>C++17 was supposed to be a major update of the C++ ISO standard. After the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open-std.org\/jtc1\/sc22\/wg21\/docs\/papers\/2015\/n4555.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Jacksonville meeting<\/a> (29.02 &#8211; 05.03) it looks like it&#8217;s rather going to be a major disappointment. I&#8217;m not trying to downplay the things that have been voted into the C++17 standard so far, but all major features we hoped for this new version were moved out: modules, concepts, ranges, coroutines, uniform function call syntax.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a brief report of the meetings, <a href=\"http:\/\/usingstdcpp.org\/2016\/03\/05\/trip-report-c-meeting-at-jacksonville\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trip report: C++ meeting at Jacksonville<\/a>, and a quote of what was moved out for the next version:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nLet me start enumerating the things we are not going to have in C++17:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Modules: They will not be in C++17, but in a separate technical specification. That is really a pity, as we will be for more years without having what I was expecting to let me get rid of the text substitution paradigm of the include directive as well as improve compilation times.<\/li>\n<li>Concepts: They will not be integrated in C++17, but stay for now in their own technical specification. There were concerns about some issues in the TS, which I do not consider essential. Despite that there is implementation experience and even other TS depends on it, it was rejected to move concepts to the IS.<\/li>\n<li>Ranges: This is a library solution highly depending on concepts. So, no way.<\/li>\n<li>Coroutines: There was a very sound proposal with implementation experience. However, again this was targeted to another technical specification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Besides that, we also will not have the half of uniform function call syntax that I thought was not controversial. To be clear, I really wanted both halves.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can discuss on the report on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/cpp\/comments\/498sfw\/trip_report_c_meeting_at_jacksonville\/\" target=\"_blank\">reddit<\/a>. The general feeling is disappointment though.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It looks like C++17 will be a big disappointment. Jacksonville committee could not agree on any major features.
